Work today was boring enough and because my headache didn't allow me to do Math for more than 30 minutes, I sketched.
I find Jordi Labanda's illustrations uniquely captivating. It's intriguing how the classic contemporary characters of his works are sort of comical and a little angular, awkward if u will, yet they are artistically attractive enough to not be compared to, say, the drawings of a 7 year old child. His illustrations are, afterall, mostly compositions of women with exagerated curves or an outrageously slim body, never in proportion. But then again, I guess a good piece of art is never really realistic.
What attracts me most is the modern essence in his pieces, how most of his pieces are fashion inspired, some with just a hint of erotica, and many depicting the lifestyle of the rich and sophisticated. However, modern they may be, it would be highly ridiculous to compare his work to that of renowned artists such as Van Gogh or Picasso, although they did play a great roles that were essential in the development of modern art; neither would it be fair to relate them to the works of Andy Warhol, who was (like Labanda) a famous commercial artist in his own time.
Anyway, here are my Jordi Labanda inspired sketches. Pretty amateur, i know.
